Top 6 Things Every School Counselor Needs

This school year marks the start of my second year as a school counselor. One of the things I have learned is that building and gathering resources is an ongoing process. Today I want to share with you the top 6 things that I could not do without as a beginning school counselor. These items are the bare minimal things that get me through the school year even though I am still collecting and developing my school counselor program.

    1. School Counselor Binder: I don’t know what I would do without my School Counselor Binder! This binder keeps me organized and on top of important meetings and appointments. There are a ton of options out there but I created one that is simple and easy to use and what I love the most is the fact that the cover pages can be colored in. Included in this binder are monthly calendars, weekly schedule, students to see list, and a notes section.

What is Counselor Mail and Why is it Important?

It has been almost two weeks since my last post. As much as I enjoy creating printables, there are two more important jobs that I tend to on a daily basis. One is that of a single mother, and the other is that of a school counselor. Now that school is in full swing, I am finding it somewhat difficult to create documents every week.

Today’s post is about something that I am super excited to implement in my school this year. School Counselor Mail! I bet you are wondering what counselor mail is and what’s so great about it. Well, by delivering mail to students I am letting them know that I appreciate them and it also helps me to get to know them better.

Counselor Mail Postcards

I can’t take complete credit for this idea. When researching ways to connect to my students, I came across this idea on the Elementary School Counseling website. Marissa explains how she delivers at least two pieces of mail to each of the 350 students at her school throughout the school year by delivering mail to one student per class per week.

Her dedication inspired me to do the same for my students. However, I have almost 800 students so my goal is to make sure every student has at least one piece of mail from me by the end of the school year. On the site you can download the template Marissa uses to deliver her mail. But I decided to go with something different.

How To Manage Your Monthly Bills Even If You’re Not a Financial Genius

Managing household expenses can be painful. Seriously, who enjoys working hard to earn a living just to turn around and give a majority of those earnings to bill collectors? None of us do! Some of us shy away from this responsibility because the idea of paying bills feels like another job in itself.

As a single mother who’s had to manage a household on one income for the past decade, I know how important it is to be aware what is coming in and out of your wallet and what has worked for me is the use of a finance calendar.

How to Organize Your School Assignments

Organization is a key ingredient to being a successful student. The sooner that this skill is learned the greater the impact it can have on student success.

Monthly Assignment Calendar

As the mother of a college freshmen and a middle school-aged child, I realized that as they progress through school, the required assignments tend to increase. I created the Monthly Assignment Calendar with that very thought in mind.

Okay, so I bet you are wondering, what is so special about this calendar. There are a ton of calendars out there to help students organize. I particularly love the Printable Student Binder created by Abby Lawson over at Just a Girl and her Blog.

Well, this calendar helps students stay on top of their homework, projects, tests, and other assignments that may be due each month for any subject area. It also helps with prioritizing. There is also a section for tracking grades or points earned for a particular assignment or test.

How can this calendar be used? It’s very simple! Students can just jot down their assignments for the month in the chart by date for all subject areas. They can also use the calendar to write in important activities, meetings, and occasions. The Monthly Assignment Calendar is a great addition to any student binder.
