It’s that time of year again! The holiday shopping season is upon us. Almost everyday a new Black Friday ad or circular shows up in my mailbox along with a ton of emails and app notifications. As I look at all the cool things that will be on sale, I’m thinking about the gifts I have to buy for family, friends, and co-workers but I haven’t been writing down any of these great gift ideas. This school year marks the start of my second year as a school counselor. One of the things I have learned is that building and gathering resources is an ongoing process. Today I want to share with you the top 6 things that I could not do without as a beginning school counselor. These items are the bare minimal things that get me through the school year even though I am still collecting and developing my school counselor program.

Well, by delivering mail to students I am letting them know that I appreciate them and it also helps me to get to know them better.
I can’t take complete credit for this idea. When researching ways to connect to my students, I came across this idea on the Elementary School Counseling website. Marissa explains how she delivers at least two pieces of mail to each of the 350 students at her school throughout the school year by delivering mail to one student per class per week.
Her dedication inspired me to do the same for my students. However, I have almost 800 students so my goal is to make sure every student has at least one piece of mail from me by the end of the school year.
